Amateras, or Amaterasu, meaning "she who shines in the heavens", is the Sun goddess in Japan's oldest religion, Shinto. (Shinto means "the way of the Gods".) Amateras was born from the left eye of the primeval being Izanagi, and is the central figure in the Shinto pantheon.
Among the most famous of stories about Amateras is how once she became cross with her brother Susano-O, the God of storms, and hid in a cave, thus plunging the world into darkness. Versions of the story may be found here, and in more whimsical detail at lyricalworks.
More Japanese mythology is available at Encyclopedia Mythica.
