For pine, which terminal emulator are you using? xterm? if so, 
it's impossible.
Pls use kterm. If you are executing kinput correctly, type Shift + SPACE
to start kana-kanji conversion. You will see the small window of kinput.
In summary:
1. kterm &
2. pine
3. Shift + SPACE
To stop kana-kanji conversion, Shift + SPACE again na.

For using the xedit, I have no idea. I think it's impossible.
Instead, mule(emacs) or jp-elvis(vi) can be used for your purpose.
