Shanghai

1.Shanghai attracts USD 6 billion foreign funds in first half year
Latest official figures show that in the first half of this year, Shanghai attracted foreign
investment totaling more than US$6 billion, up 40 percent year-on-year.
The number of newly approved foreign-financed projects in the first six months reached 2,486,
up a considerable 85.2 percent compared with the corresponding period of the previous year.
Among these projects, some 201 are large-scale ones, which involve financial input of over
US$10 million each and US$4.1 billion of the total.
The figures also indicate that a majority of 61.5 percent of the foreign capital went to the
manufacturing sector, up 38.7 percent year-on-year.
By the end of June, Shanghai had approved an accumulated 30,226 foreign-funded projects,
absorbing contracted investment of US$69.4 billion.

2.Shanghai imports more sedan cars
A total of 5,837 cars, worth a combined value of US$202 million, were imported via Shanghai
Port from January to May, according to figures from Shanghai Customshouse.
Car imports are up by 93.5 percent from the same period last year.
Out of total car imports, 98.1 percent are intermediate and luxury cars with engine size
exceeding 1,500 ml, almost treble the figure for the same period last year.
And 2,079 cars were imported from Japan and another 2,476 were from Germany, up 36.8 percent
and 60 percent respectively. Japanese and German-made cars together made up 78 percent of the
city's total car imports in the past five months.
Imports of foreign cars only stood at 906 in May due to the negative impact of severe acute
respiratory syndrome (SARS), the lowest level in the past five months.

3.Shanghai GM honored as most respected joint-venture in China
Shanghai GM, the largest Sino-US joint venture, has been honored as the most respected foreign
joint-venture in China for the year 2002.
It was the second time the company has won the honor following last year's win.
A total of 20 businesses were honored as the most respected businesses in China this year, with
Shanghai GM topping the list of sino-foreign joint-ventures.
Shanghai GM is also the only car manufacturer among the 20 businesses that was honored this
year. Meanwhile, its ranking among the 20 businesses was upgraded from last year's No.10 to No.
4.
The selection activities were jointly sponsored by the Research Center of Business Management
cases under the prestigious Beijing University and the Economy Observer newspaper.
The judgment panel consists of economists, government officials and professors.
Since Shanghai GM was set up four and half years ago, its output has been on constant rise.
Last year, its annual sales of motor vehicles exceeded 100,000 units. It is also widely engaged
in education, environment protection and charity work.

China

1.China to open travel-agency market
Overseas investors are to be allowed to set up wholly owned travel agencies in the country,
two-and-a-half years ahead of the schedule agreed with the World Trade organization.
The China National Tourism Administration and the Ministry of Commerce issued a provisional
rule on Saturday, lifting the ban on setting up travel agencies in China that are controlled or
wholly owned by foreign entities.
The rule will be effective 30 days after its issue, meaning July 14.Under the rule, overseas
investors will be able to set up travel agencies in the State Council-approved national tourism
zones in Beijing, Shanghai, the cities of Guangzhou and Shenzhen in South China's Guangdong
Province, or Xi'an in Northwest China'sShaanxi Province.
But such travel agencies will not be permitted to arrange toursfor Chinese mainland citizens to
foreign countries or to the Hong Kong and Macau special administrative regions or Taiwan
Province.
Their business is expected to be restricted to visits to the Chinese mainland of foreign
tourists and tours within the Chinese mainland by Chinese tourists.
In normal circumstances, each overseas investor will be given approval to set up in China only
one travel agency that is controlled or wholly owned by it, the provisional rule stipulates.
2. Real estate industry remains flat
China's real estate industry remained flat last month as the effects of the central
government's measures to tighten land leasing emerged.
The China Real Estate Index edged down 0.05 percent to 106.28 points in May, the National
Bureau of Statistics reported yesterday. It was the third consecutive month that the index had
declined.
The benchmark achieved a record high of 109 points in February.
The bureau attributed the fall to the central government's tightened control over land since
last December when it banned further land leasing for villa projects.
During the first five months of 2003, the price of average houses nationwide rose 9 percent
year-on-year to reach 2,289 yuan (US$275.78) per square meter. About 280 billion yuan was
invested, an increase of 32.9 percent year-on-year.
However, the gains were offset mainly by the growing amount of unsold finished apartments. The
category increased by 9.2 percent from a year ago in the first five months. The figure is
widely considered as a gauge for bubbles in the property industry.
The area of newly purchased land and newly kicked-off projects, which reflects the current
momentum of the industry, also witnessed a decline.
"The housing demand remains large, but mainly at the low-end. To generate more profit, most
developers rush to the high end," said Deng Wei, an analyst at the property research center of
the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. A total of 48 million square meters of new
houses nationwide was completed in the first five months, up 40.9 percent.
No figures for housing sales were available. Domestic banks issued loans of 119.7 billion yuan
to developers during the period, up 51.3 percent from the same period last year.
The central bank announced on Friday it would step up its control over housing loans both for
developers and buyers. Deng said it is unlikely the index will head further south.
"The new rule will curb develop-ment nationwide. But for Shanghai, the flourishing foreign
investment and growing economy guarantee growing demand," Deng said.

3. China to launch second North Pole scientific expedition
China will launch its second scientific expedition to the North Pole on July 15 from Dalian, a
port city in northeast China's Liaoning Province.
An ultra-modern icebreaker entitled "Snow Dragon", which had made the Arctic journey in 1999,
will carry 115 scientists from seven countries, including China, the United States and Finland,
to the North Pole for a 74-day research expedition.
Zhang Zhanhai, the expedition's chief scientist, said on Saturday that his team would study the
effect of the North Pole on the global climate, especially on China, and establish a
comprehensive observation system for the Arctic region to provide first-hand material for
China's polar region research.
China's first North Pole scientific expedition from July 1 to Sept. 9, 1999, aimed to collect
scientific resources on the ecological system in the Arctic waters, and the atmosphere,
geology, fishing, and marine environment of the area.
Snow Dragon, which belongs to China's third generation of polar expedition icebreakers, is
equipped with advanced guidance systems, automatic steering and experimental systems, including
a 200 square meter laboratory and ocean research instruments.

Canada

Vancouver wins right to host 2010 Winter Olympics
Canada's Vancouver lived up to their expectations to win the right to host the 2010 Winter
Olympics on Wednesday after edging out Austria's Salzburg and South Korea's Pyeongchang in a
vote at the 115th International Olympic Committee session.
The Canadians finished just three votes ahead of Pyeongchang, widely seen as outsiders, in a
tight second round of voting after their main opponents Salzburg had been eliminated in the
first round.
"It is a great day for Canada," Canadian prime minister Jean Chretien said after Olympic
president Jacques Rogge had announced the 56-53 result for Vancouver. "Vancouver is a fantastic
city and I promise you a fantastic Games."
Canada's victory left Pyeongchang broken-hearted. Some delegates left the conference hall in
tears, stunned by the defeat after having run Vancouver so close.
Pyeongchang had been expected to trail in third in the opening ballot but actually led the
first round, polling 51 votes to 40 for Vancouver and 16 for Salzburg.
"Just three votes... we lost by just three. It is very hard to take," said Toh Young-shim, a
member of South Korea's Culture Institute and a leading figure in their bid.
"It is very disappointing. It will take a while to sink in," she added as she left the scene of
the announcement.
Vancouver's victory brings the Winter Games to Canada for only the second time and the first
since 1988 when Calgary staged the event.
"It was July 1st yesterday, the birthday of Canada. Thank you for this wonderful birthday
present," Chretien told members of the IOC.
"I promise you, you will not be disappointed by Canada.
"I think (South) Korea and Austria did their very best and worked very hard. But the Canadian
delegation made a huge effort."
